If there is one place in Hanoi, where we love to go repeatedly in Hanoi, it’s the part of the old town around a street called Hàng Mã. The reason we love to return is not only because of the small Bánh Cuốn place*, at the corner with Hàng Cót street, but all the little “hang” streets.
Yep, that’s, where we will go today.
Join us as we lose ourselves in the ‘Hang’ lanes of Hanoi’s Old Town, where tradition intertwines with the present, and every turn introduces you to a new slice of Vietnamese life. We can’t wait to share this adventure with you – so let’s go!
Welcome to the pulsating heart of Hanoi’s Old Town, where each narrow street is full of life, interesting little corners, shops and each place tells a tale of its own. Each alleyway carries a unique name, all beginning with “Hang”, translating to ‘merchandise” or ‘shop’. This is a hint to its original trading past, with each street dedicated to a specific trade.
A Glimpse of History

The ‘Hang’ lanes, which date back to the 13th century, were designated by the goods they traded. Today, they continue to embrace their heritage, each narrow street offering a unique blend of tradition and modernity. From silk to silver, bamboo to buttons, each ‘Hang’ lane is a testament to the Old Town’s enduring spirit and enduring trade culture. Some say, there always was exactly 36 of these business lanes as there are today. But I could not find anything supporting that claim. Yet.
The Vibrant Hang Ma Street
No visit to Hanoi’s Old Town is complete without a stroll down Hang Ma Street. Famous for selling paper goods, it transforms into a kaleidoscope of color during festivals. Each time a festival is up to happen or simply a season or holiday is a few weeks ahead, the whole street gets into the colors of that holiday. A haven for photographers, Hang Ma is particularly dazzling during the Mid-Autumn Festival and Lunar New Year, when it brims with intricate paper lanterns, votive papers, and decorative items.
Even before western type of holidays – no matter if it is Halloween or Christmass. The street gets “dressed” different colors each time and it’s a blast to walk there, take photos or just have a coffee and watch the street’s busy crowd.
